Studio Shoot
For this school project, I worked with studio photography for the first time. The main goal was to learn how to work with artificial lighting and understand the different possibilities it offers.
About the shoot
Before setting up the studio, I first had to decide what kind of photos I wanted to create. I personally really like silhouette photography, so I wanted to experiment with this style. I achieved this by positioning the lights to shine from one or both sides, or directly from behind the model. However, I found that I liked the soft edge of light around the sides of the model’s face the most, so I decided to focus mainly on this effect. I achieved this effect by positioning the lights slightly behind the model, so they illuminated the edges of the face without the light sources appearing in the frame.
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges was getting the exposure right. I used my own, older camera, which has a more limited dynamic range, causing the photos to become grainy quite quickly. To help with this, I used a light meter to determine suitable ISO and shutter speed settings. Afterwards, I edited the photos in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, converting them to black and white and making some adjustments to the contrast and sharpness.
